Custom Hammer Boring

Custom Hammer Boring - The distance from the tip of the hammer to the center of the hole for the hammer shank, called hte hammer bore distance, is a critical dimension to ensure superior performance in touch and feel especially during very soft pianissimo playing. It is controlled by the height of the plate above the keybed (where the string begins its upward journey to the bridge), and height of the action above the keybed.

Precise control of the front bearing (see explanation under Adjustable Hitch Pins) causes the plate to vary slightly in height from the keybed. Custom boring each set of hammers individually and, after the piano has been strung and tuned, allows the craftsman to custom set the hammer bore distance to attain optimum touch and feel for each piano and for each section of the piano.

Most manufacturers bore all hammers, as the hammers are manufactured, to a dimension they hope will be accurate when the piano is finally assembled and strung.
