Bass Bridge

The bass bridge of the piano "bridges" between the strings and the soundboard. It transfers the energy of the vibrating string into the soundboard for the lower twenty-seven keys of the instrument. As with the treble bridge, the soundboard, by virtue of its size and design, then enriches the tonal characteristics of the string sound, and becomes the dynamo, which creates the air movement to bring music to our ears!

Bridge Surface - The bridge surface is blackened with an achesion colloid graphic material for precise machining of notches and easy movement of the string across the bridge. Easy movement or rendering of the string equalizes tensions between string segments thereby creating superior tuning stability. Bridge pins are individually notched front and back to attain a precise interface between the string and bridge surface for undistorted energy transfer.

Bridge Cap - The bridge cap is crafted using quarter-sawn hard rock maple to insure the integrity of the bridge and provide a solid surface for the string/bridge interface. After being attached, special machining controls the bridge height and surface tilt. This construction eliminates the possiblity of bridge Splitting sometimes seen in older pianos.

Bridge Construction - The bass bridge is constructed of 13 plies of hardrock maple, vertically laminated with two-part uretha resin glue. This special construction process provides the platform for efficient transfer of musical energy from the string to the soundboard. The bridge is securely glued and screwed to the soundboard using hardwood buttons. (See the underside of the model.) The higher bass bridge allows the strings for the bass section of the piano to pass above tenor and treble creating flexibility in scale design.

Reference Hole - A guide hole system is used to locate and control the bridge position, and to reference bridge pin holes to one another and to the frame/plate assembly of the piano.

Bridge Pins - Nickel-plated pins position the string on the bridge and provide the termination point for the speaking length.

Ribs - Sitka Spruce ribs are carefully engineered through design of thickness, width, length, curvature and spacing to provide the crown requirements of the soundboard while supporting the downbearing of the strings. The strength of Sitka Spruce ribs and their high strength to weight ratio are excellent characteristics for obtaining maximum support while creating a vibrant soundboard with richer and more lasting tonal response.
